When a cat is old and dying, which is the most humane way to let him go?
Our oldest cat is dying. He has started having mini-strokes and little seizures, and is sleeping about 22 hours a day. He can no longer do the stairs, and we have made accomodations for him. I am helping him eat (he has a hard time moving his mouth and keeping food in.) We are keeping him comfortable, and he is never alone. He can still use the litter box, and eats and drinks, and seems to gain pleasure from being held. He does not seem to have specific pain, although his body has an odor of things failing. He has had a very good life. As long as the cat is not in pain, and we are caring for him, is it kind to let him live like this, or should we consider euthanasia?
We have had several animals who became elderly, and tend to wait longer than we probably should. He is showing the same signs. Its been about two weeks since he really started failing, and up to that point, he was holding up quite well. He is 16 1/2 years old, and snoring away by my side right now.
I am in tears! What a position to be in. And I am also in almost the exact same situation. My calico is 16 1/2. Her body and her breath smell absolutely horrid. She sleeps probably 22 hrs a day like your kitty. She's not limited in getting around, she eats and drinks fine.
Maybe ask your vet what they think. Have you ever euthanized a pet before? If you decide to, stay with him while they give him the injection. You will feel a little better about it.
You are awesome for making him so comfortable and caring for him the way you do. I hope that everything works out OK.
