Shimano Sustain FE Review
With a name like "Sustain" you imagine something that is going to keep on keeping on. Does the Sustain FE live up to this expectation? By all reports the verdict is yes! Due to fine tolerances in manufacture, the use of high grade materials, and very good design, this Shimano reel is built to last. It is equally at home in either salt or fresh water.
One of the nice reports regarding the Shimano Sustain FE is that it will stand up to heavy usage. The reel has amazing smoothness without compromising on power. Construction features a lightweight aluminum frame with graphite side plate and rotor. The secret weapon used on the spool is a titanium coating around the lip. This coating combined with the small diameter of the lip delivers amazing casting results. It also provides for greater resistance to wear and surface scratching. The heart of the reel is the gear system and this features an upgraded durability enhancement to the paladin gear. Also featured is the Aero Wrap II, Oscillation Worm Gear, shielded A-RB bearings, Machined-aluminum direct drive handle, Floating Shaft, Super Stopper waterproof drag, and a Sealed maintenance port. The inside of the body has a special coating to resist corrosion.<_p_>
Of course the real test is to go out fishing and experience what the Shimano Sustain has to offer first hand. Virtually everyone who has reviewed this reel sings praises about the casting distance achieved with reel. On the retrieve you get a fast 5.7:1 recovery rate with plenty of grunt from the solid handle construction and direct drive on to the gear system. Shimano has done a good job on the winding technology that stacks the line back on the reel perfectly. This has a flow on benefit to give the smoothest possible release of the line when casting. There is no lack of power in the reel either despite its comparatively small size. The drag system of the Shimano FE comes in to its own when you get a fighting fish on the receiving end. Powerful runs are smoothly checked without any sign of shuddering. Cranking the handle exerts plenty of pressure as the reel smoothly compensates for any short runs the fish makes .
Combined with the ease of casting, you can happily fish with this reel all day long. Based on the comments that satisfied anglers have made, you are going to keep getting top performance from the Sustain FE for a long time. Also this reel represents good value when you compare the performance and componentry you get to the substantialy more expensive Stella and Stardic models.
