The tale behind the construction of the transporter involves adherence to one's principles, zeal for one's craft, and last of all, common sense. In the days before World War I, there was stiff competition between Mercedes Benz and the other groups in Germany involved in racing. However, W-154 powered by the V-12 that Mercedes came up with won 12 out of the 17 events right before the war, and stole everyone's hearts. It wasn't until 1952 that Mercedes Benz management made the decision to return to Grand Prix racing, beginning with the 1954 season.
To announce its return, Benz chose to design a special haulier that will carry its all-new W-196 racer, a racing model that had a famous Argentinean racer as its pilot. The transporter had to be fast, unique and clearly identifiable as a Mercedes production. It was also to be one of the speediest cars on the Western European roads of the day.
To be one of the first to reach the racetracks meant that you got more time to rehearse and organize. This also implied that if a racer needed to be repaired, it could be sent to the plants and brought back to the racetracks well in time. From a technological viewpoint, Mercedes Benz had installed the transporter with the best of their equipment. The 300 SL series? 3.0 liter, 6-cylinder engine and four speed manual transmission was derived and installed in it, as was the X-frame of the 300 S sedan. The braking system was one of power-assistance being provided to the regular hydraulic drums that were used. However, what was most awe-inspiring was the body work on the carrier. The steel panels used on it were inspired from most of the other panels of the day. The 180 S served as the template for the doors, the interiors fixtures, and the windshield. All in all, it could carry off two spare tires, ramps for loading, tools, and other necessary equipment for the racer with ease.
The front axle was kept unnaturally far behind the single cab, which in turn was placed too low, but the result was that the look was one that was uniquely Mercedes. The factory blue in the end simply added to the instant success that was in store for it. The truck could go faster than 100 mph, even when loaded fully with 6,600 pound's a speed that is considered to be fast even today.
The carrier was finally rolled out in the middle of 1954 and was an instantaneous sensation in the tracks in Europe, and in the U.S.as well. The transported was more the centre of attention than the racing cars themselves. When a privately owned Mercedes Benz 300 SLR crashed in the 1955 French 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race and killed 80 people, this made the company decide to keep away from racing in total. Till the autumn of the same year, all of the racing division had been retired including the transporter.
Initially, there was an idea that the transporter and its cargo should be kept in the company's own museum, but the weight turned out to be more than the floors could handle, and so this idea got done away with. Finally, in 1993, Mercedes Benz came to a decision of making a replica when they saw the large number of inquiries that came to their desks after its termination. Using only a few sketches and pictures and an outside fabricator, the company came out with it in 2000. Hence, this fleeting, yet influential, leaf in the records of Mercedes Benz racing had been rightfully restored for the benefit of anyone who cared to appreciate it.
